What to look for

The buying criteria that actually matter

  • Multi-state payroll

    Agencies expanding across state lines need solid multi-state tax handling. Smaller payroll tools miss state-specific edge cases.

  • 1099 vs. W-2 classification

    Misclassifying RBTs as 1099 contractors is a tax and workers' comp landmine. The HR tool should support proper W-2 onboarding for clinical staff.

  • ABA-specific credential tracking (separate)

    BCBA and RBT certifications, supervision hours, fieldwork — these are not in any general HR tool. Plan to use a separate credential-tracking layer.

  • Onboarding automation

    Self-serve W-4, I-9, direct deposit, and benefits enrollment cuts admin work meaningfully. Modern tools (Gusto, Rippling) do this well.
