What BambooHR does

BambooHR is a human resources information system (HRIS) focused on employee records, performance management, and HR workflows. Where Gusto leads with payroll and adds HR features around it, BambooHR leads with HR and offers payroll as a separate add-on. For ABA agencies, the typical use case is mid-size operations (15+ employees) that have outgrown Gusto's lighter HR features and want deeper performance, onboarding, and document workflows.

The product covers employee profiles with custom fields, document storage and signing, time-off tracking, performance reviews, hiring workflows, and reporting. Founded in 2008 and based in Utah, BambooHR is one of the most-recognized small-to-mid HRIS platforms.

Who it's for

BambooHR lands cleanly at mid-size ABA agencies (15+ employees) that are investing in HR processes beyond basic payroll. That includes performance reviews for clinical staff, 1:1 meeting templates, structured onboarding workflows, and detailed employee record-keeping for compliance and audit purposes.

It is less ideal for solo BCBAs and very small clinics — the feature breadth is more than they need, and the per-employee pricing makes the entry-level cost meaningful. It is also less ideal for very large agencies (200+ employees) where full enterprise HRIS platforms (Workday, ADP, UKG) offer more depth.

What stands out

The employee record system is the standout. Custom fields, document storage with signing, audit trails, and structured records make BambooHR a meaningfully better source of truth for HR data than Gusto's lighter approach. For agencies preparing for due diligence, audits, or detailed HR compliance, that depth matters.

Performance review and 1:1 features are the second standout. Templated reviews, goal tracking, and structured 1:1 meeting workflows are more developed than what payroll-first platforms offer. For agencies investing in BCBA and RBT development, BambooHR provides real scaffolding.

The onboarding workflow is also notable. New-hire checklists with task assignments and self-serve document signing reduce admin work meaningfully.

Where it falls short

The quote-only pricing is friction. Where Gusto shows its prices on the website, BambooHR requires a sales conversation, which slows evaluation and creates uncertainty about what the platform will actually cost.

Payroll being an add-on is a strategic choice but a real cost to consider. Most agencies running BambooHR also run Gusto, ADP, or Justworks for payroll. That second subscription adds up.

The absence of ABA-specific HR features is the same gap as Gusto. BCBA supervision tracking, RBT credential renewals, and fieldwork-hour documentation all need to live in another system — usually the clinical platform or a separate spreadsheet that GoodABA's credential tracking can replace.

BambooHR uses quote-only per-employee pricing. The payroll add-on is priced separately. Confirm current rates, what is included in the base plan, and contract terms directly with sales before signing.
